Proverbs: the Calendar

بكانون كن وعالفقير حن
 Bi-kánún ken wa 3al-fa2îr 7en
In December and January, have mercy on the poor.
(Kanún in our calendar refers to both months, differentiated as the first and second Kanún.)

 شباط غيمه وهواه خير من شمسه وشتاه
 Shbát gheymo wa hawáh khér men shamso wa shitéh
February's clouds and wind are better than its sun and rains.

بآذار بعشّش الدوري وبتورّق الأشجار
 Bi-âzar bi-3ashshesh al-dúri wa betwarreq al-ashjár
In March the swallows nest and the trees grow leaves.

 بآذار بتساوي الليل بالنهار
  Bi-âzar betséwe l-lél ben-nhár
 In March the night is worth the day.
(March is the time of the spring equinox, where night and day are the same duration.)

بنيسان إطفي نارك، وافتح شبابيك دارك، واسبح بالشمس لزنّارك
Bi-nîsán etfe nárak, wa fta7 shbébîk dárak, wa sba7 besh-shams la-zennárak
In April put out your fire, and open the windows of your home, and swim in sunlight up to your belt.

بتمّوز بتغلي الميّ بالكوز
Bi-tammúz bteghle l-mayy bel-kúz
In July the water boils in the jar.

 جحش البيض ما بيدفأ ذنبها إلا بعشرين تمّوز
 Ja7sh el-bîd ma byedfa danabha ella bi-3eshrîn tammúz
White mules don't get to warm up their tails till July 20.
(The hottest time of the year begins end of July; it then becomes hot even for mules)

أيلول طرفه بالشتي مبلول
Aylúl tarafo besh-shete mablúl
The edge of September is wet with rain.
(Towards the end of September, the dry season draws to an end and we may get a little rain.)
